Mindfulness is Easier to Understand than You Think

“Mindfulness is that growing awareness which

emerges through paying attention on purpose, in

the present moment, and nonjudgmentally to the

unfolding of experience.”   –Jon Kabat-Zinn

Now I am going to do what I promised you.

I am going to start to make you feel better within 10 minutes

of this Mindfulness Meditation. Here it is:

  • 1) Find a chair and sit on it comfortably or sit on the floor.   Release any tension in your shoulders. (I have done this in my cupboard at school, but these days I think it is time to come out – in this new way)

  • 2) Close your eyes or fix your unfocused eyes on the floor in front of you.

  • 3) Now concentrate on following your breath in and out of your belly.

  • 4) Keep doing this for 10 minutes or how long is a piece of string?

  • 5) Your thoughts – jobs to do, shopping, girlfriend/boyfriend, holidays, etc.,etc.,etc.- will try to move in or drag you away from your awareness of breathing because that is what the mind does. Without getting annoyed with yourself, return to your breathing.

And you are done.

Sometimes the analogy of puppy-training makes mind-wandering understandable. The puppy runs away all the time, to begin with. The trainer must patiently and gently bring him back, over and over again.Don’t beat yourself up. Congratulate yourself for doing something for YOU.

Ask yourself how your Mindfulness session went. Did you feel anything different? Do you have a sense of refreshment? Did you think it was a waste of time? Be honest. Please share your experience in a comment. I would very much like to hear from you.

Remember you have just meditated for the first time. This one exercise can be practised throughout your whole life without learning anything else. All the great Mindfulness teachers return to this exercise. You will continue to benefit.

But that would be too bad. There is so much I can share with you about Mindfulness and Meditation.

Allow me.
